Stephen Ministry seeks to bring Jesus’ love to hurting people through caring relationships. Stephen Ministers are called to and trained for ministry. They experience more than 50 hours of training to provide one-to-one, confidential Christian care to those who are bereaved, hospitalized, terminally ill, separated, divorced, unemployed, or relocated, and others who are facing a crisis or life challenge. Stephen Ministers are not counselors; they are trained lay caregivers who are there to listen and care.
Stephen Ministers give one-to-one, lay Christian care to those who are hurting or in need. One-to-one: Stephen Ministers meet privately with one care receiver of the same gender.
Stephen Ministers are trained and supervised lay volunteers, not professional counselors or therapists, pastors, or physicians. Stephen Ministers are not authorized to give legal, medical, financial, or any other advice, but Bible-based encouragement.
Stephen Ministers are Christians who care in the name of Christ. They are willing to talk about spiritual issues but won’t force them. They care by listening, supporting, encouraging, praying, being dependable and trustworthy and maintaining confidentiality in their care giving. Stephen Ministers bring the care, God brings the cure.
Stephen Ministries’ Core Purpose is summed up in the words of St. Paul in his letter to the Ephesians.”To equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ” (Ephesians 4:12-13).
